Bishop Dana Dawson

The Library at Saint Paul is named in honor of Dana Dawson (1882-1964), Bishop of the Kansas-Nebraska Area (1948-1952) and the Kansas Area (1952-1960), of the Methodist Church. It was his dream, perhaps more than that of any other, that gave rise to Saint Paul School of Theology.

The building was extensively remodeled and enlarged in 1965 and incorporates part of the National College Library built in 1948. Additional remodeling in 1993-94 included air conditioning of the stacks and installation of an elevator.

Dana Dawson Library is a member of MOBIUS, the Missouri Bibliographic Information User System, which is a consortium of academic libraries with sixty-two member colleges and universities in the state of Missouri.

The MOBIUS Union Catalog contains the approximately 18 million records of the 62 member colleges and universities and is searchable via the Internet.

The KANSAS CITY cluster is made up of several Kansas City area academic libraries within the MOBIUS library consortium (see above). The KANSAS CITY Catalog is an on-line public access catalog, including the collections of the following area libraries: Saint Paul School of Theology, Rockhurst University, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminiary, Avila University, the Kansas City Art Institute, William Jewell College, and the Metropolitan Community Colleges (Blue River, Longview, Maple Woods and Penn Valley).

The only entrance and exit to the five book stack levels is located near the Circulation Desk. Emergency exits are to be used only for emergencies and will set off an alarm.

On each level of the stacks, a door divides the inner "dark" (northern) area from the outside "windowed" (southern) area. Book shelves are identified with classification letters and numbers at the ends of the shelves. Light switches are located at each end of the bookshelves and at every door in the stacks. Please ask for help if you need it to find or retrieve library materials.

The Library receives over 500 journal subscriptions and houses over 12,000 bound journals.

Current issues of journals are found in the Library Reading Room. Back issues and bound volumes may be found on the fifth level of the library book stacks. All journals are arranged alphabetically by title.

A limited number of locking study carrels are located through out the stack areas. There is usually at least one study carrel per floor available for day use only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please see the Public Services Librarian to request semester use of locked study carrels.
